Terrestials: Their not just for summer anymore. Okay, this is an overstatement, but on many western rivers terrestials will be available into the month of Oct. I just got back from fishing the S. Platte near Cheesman and the hoppers were definately still out and about.

The smaller the stream the better luck you'll have fishing terrestials. Trees are more likely to hang over a greater portion of stream. Out of these trees all sorts of beetles and ants will fall in the river. If your fishing a heavily wooded section of river that's what you should fish: ants and beetles. If the surrounding area has a lot of grass and you see those hoppers then throw those guys. On smaller streams terrestials become a large part of the diet.

When do terrestials "hatch"? Well, the only true terrestial hatch I feel are ants during their mating flights. But there is a type of hatch called the "wind" hatch. When ever the wind kicks up more bugs will get blown off of trees and bushes into the water, and hoppers which are not very good at flying also often end up in the drink. In general hoppers will usually fish better in the afternoon since they become more active as their bodies warm up.
