I took advantage of the warm weather this afternoon and fished the South Platte. I arrived at about 12:30pm.

I first tried the egg pattern that had been so successful for me on South Boulder creek. No such luck. Changed to a brown/chocolate Y. Special and Y. Flash (sz 22). After a few casts I landed a nice 14 inch rainbow on the Y Special. Moving upstream I hooked and landed a nice 20 inch rainbow on the Y Flash. The last fish of the day for me was a 13 inch brown on the Y Special. So while there was not a lot of action, one could still find fish. At these temps. I don't think the fish are going to move far for a fly especially a midge. So you need to get it right in front of their noses.

Talked to some other guys who said they were actually getting a little dry fly action on Parachute Adams. I only saw a few BWO's when I first arrived and only one fish rising to those.

I definately find myself changing flies less often when its cold out. It just seems to be more of a pain. In some ways I think this is a good thing, as I have a habit of changing flies too frequently some times. After all you can not catch fish while your tieing a fly on your line.

The weather was overcast in the afternoon with very little wind. The temperture was probably about 40 degrees. Streamflow appears to have been about 70 cfs while I was there. It appears that they dropped it from about 110 cfs at noon.

If you decided to head up there beware of high winds that started this evening. I always go to www.wunderground.com for my weather forecasts. There often are what they call "personal weather stations" at the bottom of the page that are more likely to tell you what is happening in that area (especially rural areas). For this trip for example I entered Deckers, CO. And then at the bottom there were personal weather stations in Bailey and Pine. Click on those to find whats happening wind and temperture wise.

It seems that it is time fish thread midges. I always like the brown ones with black heads or the white ones with black heads (miracles...), but who
knows perhaps I would have caught more fish if I had tried a different color. But what ever your favorite those should be your first choices probably on the river.
