What a nice day today was. Greenback cutthroats rising to dries. I sometimes forget how beautiful these fish are. 2 elk came down and got in the water less than 75 feet from me for about 30 minutes (To see the elk click on the picture to the right). A lot of people around the water, but not extremely crowded in the water.

I fished it today and last Friday in the afternoon. That is a bit too late in the day. If you really want to catch the Callebaetis hatch get there by 10:30 and by 11:00 it should be in full swing. I did have pretty good luck with a Quigly style Callibaetis cripple and a Grey Quill. Later in the afternoon a grey spinner is the way to go. The first 2 can be size 14 or 16. The spinner is a 16. In any case go prepared for the afternoon showers that hit the mountains. For the hatch most fish will be in fairly shallow water close to shore, nothing over 5 feet. For the spinner fall in the afternoon (around 3-6) the fish maybe in slightly deeper water.

The spinner you want to key on are the females not the males. Not many of the males end up in the water after mating. The females have a very dark leading edge on the wing and they'll head out to the water when the wind is not blowing to lay their eggs.

The water temperture was quite warm, I would say maybe 60.

Next week keep your eyes out for the damsels. I saw a few flying around, but the fish appeared to be keyed in on the Callibaetis.
